Three men in green velvet hats (aka) Seemingly important

Oil on canvas: 30 x 30 x 3.5 cm

Catalogue reference: CK-jj020

History is littered with societies, clubs, tribes and institutions that have skilfully used the power of clothing to amplify their influence on the society in which they operate. With the hat often sitting high upon the list of the most potent of these items. The cloaking power of threads should never be underestimated! It can intimidate enemies and subjugate peers. It can influence posture, body language, motivation and mood. The right outfit can enhance creativity, focus and negotiation skills.

Dressing the part starts early. Most children don’t have a dressing-up outfit they own a dressing-up box, crammed with multiple, magical personas. They are able to wrap themselves inside an oversized coat and scarf instantly transforming themselves into an adult. When a girl shuffles into a pair of her mother’s high heels it doesn’t just give her extra height it gives her EXTRA attitude!

Artist’s notes

The transformative magic of dressing-up to be someone doesn’t diminish with age. From the dandy to the dictator. From silky cravat to shinny epaulette, clothing is used to change how we feel about ourselves and also send signals to others about our success, social status and desirability. A good disguise can serve you well as both armour and inspiration.

So if you’re in need of a little sartorial rejuvenation today you could always step-out in a tall green, velvet hat and change your own perspective and the way the world looks back at you!
