Artist’s Notes:

La Belle Époque (roughly 1871-1914) was an era marked by peace, optimism, economic prosperity, and incredible artistic, scientific, and technological advancement. Centered in Paris it featured profound changes in arts (Impressionism, Art Nouveau), new inventions (electricity, cars, cinema), and a vibrant café culture, ending abruptly with World War I.
The term ‘La Belle Époque’ was coined retrospectively, after the savage turbulence and hardships that befell Europe in the 20th Century.
The work, as well as being a celebration of ‘
la joie de vivre’ is an echo-a question about the cyclic nature of human behaviour. Are we not in some ways caught in the throws of a repeat performance—witnessing the end of a second Belle Époque?
