Artist’s notes

An exploration of the visceral, enigmatic energy of womanhood (which the artist sees in his own daughter). The included objects are symbolic references to ‘possibility’, instinct and fiery passion.

In art and literature bones are often depicted as a symbol of mortality. The fine bone china cup alludes to the refined cultural custom of taking tea which is, somewhat at odds with the materials used in the cups manufacture and the human instinct to kill and use animals.

Note: Bone china was first commercially made by Thomas Frye at his Bow Porcelain Factory in East London in 1748. The factory was located in the East end of London close to the cattle markets and slaughterhouses, providing easy access to the animal bones needed to create the bone ash used in the manufacture of ‘bone china’.
