A mature man encircled. He supports a fantasy animal inflatable which,
in turn, we suspect is to support him as he takes to some imminent
watery surroundings. Here the rubber ring is a symbol of support,
of childhood need, of learning, adventure, fantasy and fun.
We all need support at various stages of our lives…don’t we?
As we progress in one way we regress in another.

A work of whimsy with profound intent. A look at life from one end to the other in a single snapshot.

This figure’s watery exploits are to be supported with an air-filled plastic sack. Likely inflated using another air filled asset (the lungs). A man possibly in his autumn years who is in need of physical support—perhaps he has never learned to swim—then again he might be out, just to have some ageless fun and make a big splash. This sculpture is shipped in a wooden protective case (see gallery for sample image).

Artist’s notes
Solid bronze figure hand cast at Red Temple foundry in the heart of Birmingham, England (home to the Industrial Revolution). This work offers strength, beauty and innocence in a human frame not readily associated with standard Western cultural aesthetics and contemplates our need for support at various stages of life. A profound and serious work of art wrapped, neatly with metaphors about the process of ageing and retaining our child-like wonder.

The inflatable: an air filled sack—are we not essentially an air filled sack?
Bellows simply opening and closing over a short span of time?
When there is no continuous, rhythmic inhalation and exhalation—
no filling of the lungs with fresh air, we are done.
“We must breathe and learn for as long as we can.”

Anchor man was a finalist in the Mrs Toolip International Art Competition 2023.
